AEGEAN LOOM HAS CONFIDENCE IN OUR TURKISH WEAVERS WHO STILL VALUE THE HIGHEST QUALITY PRODUCTS, CRAFTED BY THEIR SKILLED HANDS. THEY CREATE UNIQUE LIMITED PIECES THAT LAST.
Some may remember when quality, natural and organic were not choices, they just were. A time when craftsmanship and the work of a true artisan was appreciated. All the textiles we sell are woven on old-style shuttled looms using natural materials, such as GOTS certified organic cotton, linen, bamboo and silk. All fibres used are Turkish, the artisans are Turkish, weaving in Turkey. Just 20 years ago, weaving villages around Turkey were full of many different kinds of old-style shuttled looms, a lot were found in family homes. Even in Istanbul, looms making the famous looped Turkish towels could be found.
Most of these people between then and now have gone bankrupt and lost their livelihoods in weaving. Where these people went and what they are doing now, we do not know because, sadly, we never had the chance to meet them. At Aegean Loom, we support the weaving families and individuals that still have a weaving tradition in Turkey. These families create handmade, hand-loomed Turkish towels and peshtemals, in a quality that you can no longer find and in designs that are truly beautiful and unique. These few artisans are in small villages scattered from the south to the southeast of Turkey, and they preserve the ancient art of weaving in Turkey, by increasing production and bringing a sense of honour back into the profession. Hand-weaving a textile results in a higher quality product than factory-made goods It also benefits the family and the community, and decreases our carbon footprint on the planet.
It is distressing to know that they almost lost their looms in 2009 to scrap metal due to competition with mass-produced factories, which can produce up to 30,000 boucle towels in the same time it takes one of our artisans to make one boucle towel by hand.
We specialise in an art that is truly on the edge of extinction.
